by Karen Rempel Paperback - 160 pages
Instructions are clear and concise. As well, diagrams and callouts are scattered throughout the manual, giving the reader a sense of confidence that beading can be so easy. If you do encounter a problem, there's a trouble-shooting section to help you out (something many instructional manuals do not provide). I find this section more helpful in that I can learn and prepare for the potential pitfalls. As well, the text is a fairly comprehensive authority on the art of beading. While other texts may elaborate more fully on specific aspects of beading, the Complete Beading for Beginners brings it all together. You don't need to go to a library to research beading; it's all at your fingertips. Also, the author has finally provided written instructions on beading techniques that had previously existed only by word of mouth. I've got a copy for my family and I've just purchased another copy for my niece. Should any other family members show an interest in beading, they will receive a copy of Complete Beading for Beginners. Without a doubt, I bead you not.
Paperback - 128 pages
I've never beaded before and this is the first book that I bought. The instructions and diagrams were precise and easy to follow - I finished two projects within the first week. The designs are beautiful, and are very easily adapted to your own tastes . In addition, the author includes a "designer's notebook" at the end of every chapter, with her own variation ideas. I'd definitely recommend this to a first time beader - and I'm sure that the
beautiful designs would provide great inspiration for a more experienced
jeweler.
Paperback - 128 pages I've been collecting beads, making jewelry and reading bead books since 1970 and Sara Withers' "Exotic Beads" is far and away the best bead book for the design of necklaces, bracelets and earrings I have ever seen. The designs range from simple to complex, the photographs are large and clear and the instructions are detailed and easy to follow. The book begins with an introduction to the history of beads and beading followed by sections on tools, equipment and findings, followed by a long section on "techniques" including finishing, weaving, using wire, beadwork, loom work and making cords and braids. The 45 designs are presented next each with a list of supplies and step-by-step instructions. Many different artists contributed work to this book which is one of the best things about it -- you get to see a wide variety of materials and designs all exquisitely photographed. An excellent book for all persons interested in beading, from beginners to experts. by Cindy Jenkins, Leslie Dierks (Editor) Hardcover - 112 pages Reviewer: A reader from San Diego An excellent book, extremely well illustrated. For each section she provides not only clear instructions, but also photographs of the procedure being done, as well as simple photos of the finished product. The book covers beginning and advanced lampworking techniques, from creating simple beads to advanced embellishment, with brief sections on container vessels, buttons, and marbles. Throughout the book there are wonderful pictures of different kinds and styles of lampworked beads by many different bead artists; clear captions allow you to understand what went in to the making of each bead. Even if you never light a torch, this is a great book just to leaf through! I've noticed that it is offered with beginning lampwork kits by a number of glass supply stores. Don't miss it if you are at all interested in beads, either as a collector or as a craftsperson.
Spiral-bound 4th edition A must for someone starting out in glass beadmaking
This book is invaluable for anyone interested in glass bead making, from beginner to experienced bead maker. It goes from safety and studio setup to techniques used in creating various glass beads both using soft and hard glass. It highlights some methods for pulling cane and making murrini. It is an all around excellent instructional book, but definitely not a coffee table book.
